Have you ever felt forced happiness? People pressuring you to smile and think positive when everything’s falling apart? Sure, positivity is something that can bring light to people but it isn’t what everyone’s need. You don’t have to smile every single time you feel pain. In fact, you don’t even have to be positive all the time. It is your choice. Your will. Your way.

A lot of people think that anxiety attacks, the feeling of sadness and depression is just a mere act of gaining attention but it really isn’t just that. A person suffering from those symptoms needed guidance. They need someone who will support and hear them. They don’t need your positivity. Sometimes what they really want to hear is that, it is okay to be sad at times, just let it go.

These emotions are often manifested by childhood. Parents are mostly the reason why their children feel alone and empty. Parents who constantly remind their children that what they’re feeling are just a product of what they see at televisions, what they read, what they hear. Parents who always advised their children to just think positively without actually hearing and understanding their side.  I’m sure there are still parents who separate themselves from this norm, but still, this culture of toxic positivity remains and disgruntled few innocent hearts.

In order to stop this, the change should always start at their homes. At the people whom these beautiful souls trusted. Let us start promulgating a healthy household. A household where children are free to express their opinions. A household where children are free to express who they are. And a household that listens, understands, and empathizes with their children. Because sometimes, what they need is an ear. An ear who listens to their pain. And who can listen to who they are. Being positive is nice, but too much of it is overwhelming.
