Corona virus or most notably known as Covid-19 is today’s version of apocalypse or doom. It all started in the last months of 2019 but the dangers and risk of this virus is still prevalent and continues to lurk in the shadows eyeing its next victim. Though this phenomena is a serious threat, some took this opportunity to be unified as one. Both the citizens and its government. Some won, some are still fighting, but others just chose not to dwell within this situation. Others unite, while some are divided. The latter being the situation in the Philippines right at this very moment.

While others joined hand in hand to combat the battle, Filipinos chose to fight amongst themselves. Maybe it’s the lack of cooperation and discipline? Or maybe it is the lack of good governance? But the answer is very simple. It is the lack of trust between two ends. The trust that combines the strength of two is missing. Hence, the commotion. How will the government convince its citizens if they didn’t trust the system and the people who are in position? On the other hand, how will the people properly state their opinions if the government itself does not trust their jurisdiction and just tagged them as antis who wanted to disrupt the system? See. It’s because they lack trust. The very important aspect one shall possess when it comes to fighting a pandemic.

Ironic isn’t it? Filipinos are known to coin the word “Bayanihan”, a Filipino custom derived from a Filipino word “bayan”, which means nation, town or community. The term bayanihan itself literally means “being in a bayan”, which refers to the spirit of communal unity, work and cooperation to achieve a particular goal. But they themselves don’t value or practice Bayanihan. Moreover, it shows that the people just want everything for themselves and none for the others. The “we” is changed into “I”, and “Bayan” is now just yourself. How can they fight this pandemic if they cannot find their own battles as a country? With the rising toll of patients, how will they survive.

That’s why they need to assess this. Took it upon themselves to reevaluate decisions. Reestablish choices. Renew perspectives. Governments should trust their citizens’ opinion and inputs on preventive measures, strategies and the shout of mass testing instead of red-tagging. The citizens, therefore, should trust the governments’ aid and follow the set of guidelines implemented while on quarantine. It takes two to tango. And maybe it also takes these two to act as one in times of crisis in order to achieve success and prosperity. They need to act now, before thousands of blood is shed.

Let the new norm be We instead of I. Bayanihan instead of Bayan in One.
